Commercial design has had remarkable success in sectors as diverse as they are off the beaten track. In fact, commerce and design are becoming absolutely inseparable, in businesses large and small and in all fields of merchandising. As proof, this publication points to the great success of the annual Commerce Design Montréal contest, running from 1995 to 2004, considered an indicator of the evolving relationship between commerce and design. This publication was revised in 2007 and serves as a reference tool for the Success@Montréal-Commerce Program.
The Cahiers des bonnes pratiques en design—Imaginer, réaliser la ville du 21e siècle ("Handbooks of Best Practices in Design—Imagining and Achieving the City of the 21st Century") are designed for anyone interested in improving the quality of the urban environment (e.g., elected officials, promoters, municipal managers, urban design professionals) and seeking examples to inspire their approaches as well as tools to guide their activities. The notebooks will be enhanced over the years through the addition of methodological guides and new examples of Montréal-based best practices. The Cahiers des bonnes pratiques en design urbain consist of three distinct documents as well as an introductory booklet.

New Design Cities is a compilation of the proceedings of the symposium of the same name, held in Montréal on October 6, 7 and 8, 2004. Based on case studies, the publication looks at the actions and events that helped seven medium-sized entities – Montréal, Saint-Étienne, Lisbon, Stockholm, Glasgow, Antwerp and Times Squares, New York – position themselves. It confirms their status as emerging design metropolises. Interviews with the mayors and a selection of opinions from residents and designers of the cities highlighted all point to the importance of citizens, designers and politicians in the development of any design city. The book also includes more-theoretical reflections by three eminent thinkers in the field of cities and design: François Barré (Paris), Saskia Sassen (Chicago) and John Thackara (Amsterdam and Bangalore).
